What is Colpocleisis?

In some patients not medically able to withstand a vaginal reconstructive procedure, and who do not wish to be sexually active in the future, the choice of treatment may be total colpocleisis or vaginectomy In this procedure, the pelvic floor musculature is brought together to block the prolapse, the vaginal bulge is reduced and the length of the vagina is shortened. This procedure has minimal failure rate and is a great option for older patients who have not been sexually active for many years and do not plan to resume intercourse. If she is unsure about future sexual activity or not ready for an obliterative repair, a wait and watch approach or pessary may be used. If she wants definitive treatment of her prolapse and would like to resume sexually activity, a restorative prolapse repair will be done when possible.
