How Is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Treatment (BHRT) Different?

Did you know women could have low testosterone levels? Despite testosterone being an androgen and mostly related to male development, women also produce the hormone, and it can be a key component in several quality of life phenomena—like sexual function/pleasure, mental clarity, and physical strength. Lows come with age (or after operations like oophorectomies) but the issues that stem from the drop can be managed with BHRT.

What is BHRT?

Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy is essentially supplementing your natural hormones with hormones that are made from plants. They are identical to human hormones, and in this case implanted under a portion of skin so that they release evenly and consistently. SottoPelle is our choice for hormone replacements over shots and creams due to its ability to gradually get you the supplementation you need without spikes, or guesswork.

The pellets are about the same size as a grain of rice. After the injection site (likely your buttock) is locally anesthetized, the pellet is implanted. Then, similarly to how a hard candy gradually melts in your mouth, the pellet dissolves over the course of a few months. You can expect to come back for an additional implant every three to six months, similar to a long term prescription.

Why do we use SottoPelle over other options?

Creams and injections cause hormone levels to spike drastically and fall rapidly. As with most changes in our bodies, gradual, steady incrementation is better than a huge boost that peters out. It’s also much easier to let a board-certified professional handle your administration — creams are messy and needles can potentially break when handled improperly.

Bio-identical hormones react more favorably with your body because they’re exactly what your body would make if it could. Though SottoPelle’s formula is plant-based, once you get the components in a lab, they’re chemically indistinguishable from the hormones your adrenal glands and ovaries produce.

Now that you know the what and the why, feel free to schedule a consultation where we can answer any additional SottoPelle questions you may have. And for anyone not in the Central Texas area, we offer virtual consultations— once you’re ready to make the trip, we’ll be happy to get you what you need.
