Gotta Go! Tips for Traveling with Incontinence

Traveling should be an exciting adventure. If you’re one of the 15 million Americans who struggle with incontinence on a daily basis, traveling may be your worst nightmare. With the holidays right around the corner, sitting on a plane or car for hours at a time may not be the most pleasant experience for you. If incontinence is holding you back from enjoying that relaxing getaway with your family and friends, then it’s time for you to learn about some useful tips for traveling with incontinence!

Tip #1: Plan Your Route
If you’re traveling by car, use Google Maps to identify rest stops or gas stations along your drive for bathroom breaks. Don’t forget to account for added time to your total transit to make sure you arrive at your destination as according to plan. Avoid over consumption of fluids that may increase urinary frequency and urgency.

If you’re traveling by plane, view the seat map before choosing your seat (if possible) to secure aisle seats that are near the restrooms. Sitting in an aisle seat can prevent the awkwardness of having to climb in front of other passenger’s laps every time nature calls. Pay close attention to your liquid intake and refrain from asking for coffee or that tiny bottle of Jack and Coke when that drink cart comes by.

Tip #2: Always be Prepared
Create a travel kit that contains essentials that can manage your incontinence. Some suggestions for your travel kit include:

  • Pads and liners for light leakage
  • Protective underwear for heavy leakage
  • Extra undergarments and pants
  • Hand wipes and antibacterial products
  • Plastic bags to hold soiled clothing

Organize these items in a small carry-on luggage or backpack for easy access.

Tip #3: Don’t Sweat It
Keep in mind that taking a trip should be fun and relaxing.
