Do I Still Need a Pap Smear after Hysterectomy?

The need for continued pap smears after hysterectomy depends on the type of hysterectomy done and your personal history of pap smears.

Following a supracervical hysterectomy, traditional pap smear guidelines are continued.

After a total hysterectomy, including removal of the cervix, if there’s no history of high-grade precancerous lesions or cervical cancer; pap smears are no longer recommended. After a total hysterectomy in a patient with history of abnormal pap smears, regular pap smear guidelines are followed.
