Is It Possible To Tighten Your Vagina?
Vaginal laxity is a natural and common condition among women. It is not necessarily dangerous, but it can be uncomfortable. Age, genetics and childbirth are all factors that cause the vagina to stretch and relax. This looseness can lead to decreased sensation during intercourse. You may be wondering whether or not it’s possible to reverse some of these changes and renew the shape and structure of your vagina, and fortunately the answer is yes – there are many treatment options available for tightening the vagina.
Vaginal rejuvenation options range from laser therapy to reconstructive surgery, and can revive and restore your vaginal anatomy. The recommended vaginal rejuvenation treatments will vary from patient to patient, depending on their specific symptoms and expectations. Vaginal rejuvenation surgery (also called feminine rejuvenation surgery) is a procedure that lifts and lengthens the vagina, restoring vaginal anatomy that has loosened over time. It’s broken down into two separate components: vaginoplasty and perineoplasty.
Vaginoplasty is necessary when the caliber of the vagina is enlarged. During vaginoplasty, the muscle is brought together and secured using sutures. This tightens the vaginal canal, and any excess tissue is also removed during this time. Perineoplasty is most beneficial when a patient presents with a gaping introitus or vaginal opening, a smaller vaginal caliber, and a decreased perineal body (the area between the vagina and the anus). During a perineoplasty, the perineum and opening of the vagina are rebuilt.
Vaginoplasty offers more permanent results than laser vaginal rejuvenation, and is a better option for patients that are experiencing more noticeable laxity. The surgery itself is performed within a hospital or surgical center and takes around two hours total. Following surgery, patients are encouraged to take two weeks off from work to recover. It takes about six weeks for the vagina to fully heal and the stitches to dissolve, and during this time patients should refrain from intercourse or any strenuous activity that might inhibit the area from adequately healing. If you’re struggling with vaginal laxity, then we encourage you to reach out to Austin Urogynecology to discuss what treatment options will work best for you. All patients will have a consultation beforehand so that we can learn more about your symptoms and your expectations. We are pleased to offer our services locally as well as to those from San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, and beyond. In some cases, a consultation will reveal if a patient is suffering from pelvic organ prolapse. This is when the organs surrounding your pelvis “drop” into your vagina. It can also create the sensation of vaginal looseness. A formal prolapse repair is required in these instances, and can be conducted at the same time as vaginoplasty.
