Rectifying your Rectocele
Many women experience vaginal looseness, decreased sensation with sex, and even constipation following vaginal deliveries. The supportive tissues become stretched with the stresses of pregnancy and delivery.
This stretching can lead to a rectocele, which is a bulging of the rectum into the vagina. Some women will notice a vaginal bulge and may have a sense of incomplete defecation or worsening constipation. There may be a need to splint the vagina (press on the back side of the vagina) to allow stool to pass for bowel movements. So, when sex no longer has the pleasure and feel it once did and worsening constipation occurs, what are your treatment options? We stage the size of the rectocele on a scale from 1-3. A size 2 or 3 rectocele is typically treated surgically, to restore the anatomy of the vagina by lifting and lengthening the vagina and tightening the caliber. The tightening effect of the procedure treats the looseness with intercourse and improves friction for the woman and her partner. For smaller rectoceles or when there is looseness in the absence of prolapse, laser treatment with the diVa laser is a wonderful option to tighten the vagina and rejuvenate the vaginal tissues.
