First Over-The-Counter Medication for Overactive Bladder

The FDA has approved Oxtrol transdermal patch to be sold over-the-counter for women 18 and over for treatment of overactive bladder. Until this, all anticholinergic medications were prescription only. The FDA approved the drug to be sold OTC after reviewing its safety and efficacy in nine studies of over 5,000 women. The approval of OTC Oxytrol was supported by the American Urogynecologic Society. Oxytrol is expected to be available OTC this fall. The patch will be applied every four days to alleviate symptoms of urinary urgency, frequency and urge urinary incontinence. The oral form of this medication and other anticholinergic medications for overactive bladder will still be available in prescription form.
